Professor Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko was an eminent yet controversial figure in Russian medicine. His brilliance and scientific rigor commanded the respect of the scientific elite and he made numerous important contributions to the Academy of Medical Science, and the Russian space and athletic programs.

From the early 1950’s, Professor Buteyko was drawn to the idea that the way we breathe profoundly influenced our level of health. But the direction of modern medicine was firmly set toward innovative new drugs and surgical procedures. Consequently his greatest contribution, a systematic approach to reverse chronic diseases without drugs, provoked enormous antagonism from his peers.

For many years Professor Buteyko was considered an eccentric pariah, obsessed with his own contrarian ideas. He was routinely ridiculed and ostracized and suffered tremendous personal and professional hardships. But his legendary results accumulated, and support arose from patients and the general scientific community.

Years of research and practical work began to receive the recognition it deserved when his method was finally endorsed by the Russian Ministry of Health in 1985. But to this day (as in the West) it is strenuously ignored by the mainstream medical industry. Fortunately, Professor Buteyko anticipated this intransigence and he managed to bypass the system with his own team of practitioners.

Over a million people in Russia have learnt the Buteyko Method and in the fifteen years it has been in the “West”, perhaps 60,000 people have discovered the benefits of it.

In 2003, Professor Buteyko passed away, leaving behind a legacy of hundreds of thousands of grateful patients - an extraordinary achievement by any standard. But more than this, through his instruction, training and guidance, he prepared the way for eventually millions of people to discover a profound improvement in their health and quality of life.
